Applications 1 Jun 2026 09:00 - 29 Jun 2026 15:00 AEST (Wayback capture 20260612233218 of campaign-dates agrees). Referee reports due 30 Aug 2026; re-preference round 4-7 Sep 2026. Term dates JHO/SHO 18 Jan 2027-23 Jan 2028; Registrar/PHO 1 Feb 2027-6 Feb 2028. PATCH 2026-09-13: offers_from 2026-08-03 is community-sourced (9 reports) - the Reg/PHO offer round proper opened Monday 3 Aug 2026, with strays before it (an SHO offer ~27 Jul and a medical PHO offer 31 Jul). JHO/SHO offers are a separate later stage: the JHO/SHO recruitment period ran 9-25 Sep 2026, Gold Coast sending invites from 11 Sep (https://www.reddit.com/r/ausjdocs/comments/1wbbhom/). Official campaign URL (retains opens/closes/second round): https://www.careers.health.qld.gov.au/medical-careers/resident-medical-officer-rmo-and-registrar-campaign - its campaign-dates page, fetched 2026-09-13, still publishes no offer dates for the 2027 clinical year. status downgraded to 'expected' and source_kind to 'community' only because the row now mixes official and community dates; open/close remain official.

Incidents

  • Applicants received an email from a Queensland hospital in early July 2027-cycle reading 'we would like to place you after nominate as first preference' — widely received, and the thread's conclusion was that it was an administrative error sent before candidates had been released to hospitals. How the QLD cycle actually works, in 7 mechanics from r/ausjdocs (not policy)
One application, ranked preferences lore 8 authors
A single Queensland Health RMO & Registrar Campaign application nominating level (JHO / SHO / PHO / registrar) and up to five facility/specialty preferences. HoDs receive bundles containing all five preferences; competitive departments fill from first preferences only, so ranking a job second is functionally not applying for it. Multiple offers are possible but only one can be accepted; for some pathways declining the first offer removes you from the pool entirely.
CV template, no cover letter field lore 5 authors
The campaign supplies its own CV format and a career-goals statement; there is no cover-letter slot (you can staple one to the CV). Senior staff report not reading cover letters at all and going straight to the CV and the target-question answers.
Referee trap — emails fire on Save lore 6 authors
The online application emails your referees the moment you click Save on the referee page, not when you submit. Editing that page afterwards deletes any reports already received and re-sends the requests, so a referee who has already filled it in has to do it again. Referee reports for registrar candidates are due roughly a week after applications close, not at submission.
Interviews are the exception lore 7 authors
Many health services make offers with no interview at all, including RBWH for rotational RMO; competitive PHO/registrar jobs do interview, generally only from the first preference. Not being interviewed is not a rejection signal.
Two-stage offer sequence lore 9 authors
Registrar/PHO offers run first (late July–August); JHO/SHO offers only start once the PHO/registrar round is finished, because unsuccessful PHO applicants fall back into the RMO pool. A generic 're-confirm your preferences' email goes to everyone between the two rounds — it is not a signal about your application.
Re-preference rounds and vacancy lists lore 7 authors
Unsuccessful applicants are emailed a list of the remaining vacancies and invited to re-preference; this happens more than once, with a further round in mid/late October naming everyone 'yet to obtain a position'. The community treats this as the real safety net.
Outside the campaign lore 9 authors
Queensland is the jurisdiction where cold-calling still works: EDs are chronically short, private hospitals (Greenslopes, Wesley, Mater) and QEII hire directly, and people who miss the deadline entirely report walking into SHO jobs by phone or email.

Dots are the median stated date of the hand-read reports the encoders matched to that campaign, weighted by how many comments said so; where none were matched, the median posting date of comments saying a campaign for that state opened, closed, interviewed or offered in the same calendar year — a sanity check on the official date, not a date. Dates drift a week or two each year.

When ads actually closed

Closing months of 38 closed PGY2+ listings since 2023, by employer and specialty

"Usually closes" is the modal month and its share; under three ads and we don't call it. An ad re-advertised three times counts three times. Outside NSW the record starts when we began scraping each portal.
