There are formal late rounds — SA runs late-vacancy management from 22 Oct to 1 Feb 2, QLD an open round from 9 Nov 3, WA a mid-year pool from January 4 — and NSW advertises ad-hoc vacancies year-round 1. People withdraw in December and January. Jobs appear.
The campaigns are not the last word. NSW runs ad-hoc vacancies on eRecruit all year and opened its second round on 29 Sep 2026 for the 2027 year 1. SA MET keeps offering to 8 Oct and then runs a formal late-vacancy management phase from 22 Oct 2026 to 1 Feb 2027 2. Queensland's open round starts 9 Nov 3. WA opens a mid-year pool in January 4. The ACT is still making offers in January 5. If it is October and you have nothing, three states have a published process you have not used yet.
Vacancies are real, not theoretical. ACEM's 2025 site census found 55.3% of accredited emergency departments reporting trainee vacancies, up from 52% the year before 6. Queensland's own campaign vacancy update in September 2026 still listed unfilled general surgery PHO posts 7. Position numbers and filled positions are not the same thing.
What actually works is unglamorous. Email the junior medical workforce unit at every hospital you would move to, including the ones you would rather not 8. Take the relief term. The community's repeated report is that hospitals are short of RMOs in January because of last-minute withdrawals, and that the number of genuinely qualified applicants per rotational RMO job is small once spam applications are stripped out 8.
The counter-argument you should hear. "There are always jobs" is true nationally and false locally. Victorian budget cuts produced a year where people genuinely did not place 9, and the price of the guarantee is mobility — the job exists in Darwin, Burnie or Mount Isa, not necessarily in your postcode 8.
