Separately, to each state, on its own portal and timetable. Nothing stops you applying to all of them — for the 2027 year WA and TAS opened 25 May, QLD 1 June, SA 10 June, NSW 14 July, Victoria 27 July 12345. The work is that every campaign wants a different CV and a different referee count.
There is no national application. Eight jurisdictions, eight portals, eight timetables. For the 2026 campaign (2027 clinical year) WA's centralised RMO/SMR pool and Tasmania's statewide RMO campaign both opened 25 May 45, Queensland 1 Jun 3, SA MET 10 Jun 2, NSW's main round 14 Jul 1 and Victoria's PMCV PGY2 Match 27 Jul 6. They overlap, so you can run three or four at once — and nobody will tell you that you are allowed to.
The paperwork is the actual work. Queensland wants its own CV template of four pages or fewer plus two referee reports with at most one from a registrar 3. Tasmania mandates its own RMO CV template, three nominated referees and no selection-criteria statement 5. NSW wants written responses to selection criteria at 1,000 characters each, two referees including at least one supervisor from the last 12 months, and explicitly no cover letter 1. SA needs at least two online referee reports or the application is ineligible 2. PMCV wants 2–3 referees of whom at least two are consultants, and you must apply in the match and directly to every health service you preference 6. Line those up in May, not August.
Decide early or lose the option. Every campaign except the NT has closed by mid-August, and once a state campaign closes it is identifying reserves, not taking new applicants 7. The recurring post is someone who became willing to move in August and found one state left.
The logistics are survivable. People move state over a weekend between contracts 8. Queensland reimburses relocation costs and NSW lets you salary-package them 8. Ask before you sign, not after.

RMO spot competitiveness depends on the state and the stream you want to go down but general RMO / BPT generally is pretty okay in most states, even metro.
Any state that has closed its state campaign has either already or is in the process of identifying first choice candidates and reserves, the college has nothing to do with this process, so applying to the college alone without a job wouldn't achieve anything.
