Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) is seeking a dedicated Post Graduate Fellow in General Surgery to join our team at Canterbury Hospital!

The primary purpose of the role of the Post Graduate Fellow in General Surgery (Acute Care and Emergency Surgery) is to provide a structured post-Fellowship development program for a recently qualified specialist General Surgeon, consolidating advanced clinical skills while developing expertise in emergency surgery leadership, service implementation, clinical governance, education and research.

The Post Graduate Fellow will provide high-quality clinical care, diagnostic and consultative specialty services in General Surgery at the level of a Post Graduate Fellow, and participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities within the General Surgery Department and Canterbury Hospital as required. The position will coordinate and support General Surgery Mortality and Morbidity meetings, including preparation of agendas, documentation of minutes, monitoring of actions arising, and support implementation of quality improvement initiatives. They will ensure high standards of professional performance and contribute to an academic environment which supports education, research and professional development.

The Fellow will play a central role in implementing, evaluating and continuously improving Canterbury Hospital's enhanced all-day emergency surgery model. The role will provide senior clinical support for emergency general surgical patients and a key point of liaison between General Surgery, other surgical specialties, Anaesthetics, the Operating Suite, Emergency Department, inpatient units and hospital management. The role also includes coordination of, and participation in, dedicated emergency theatre sessions and general surgical care, together with departmental administrative support, supervision of junior medical officers and medical students, support to coordination and delivery of trainee education, quality improvement and research activities.

The successful applicant will be a current registered Medical practitioner, registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) with recognised qualifications in General Surgery and/or other equivalent specialist recognition as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialists (State) Award.

Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship prior to, or within three months of the expected commencement date, may be considered.

The option of part-time/job share arrangements is available.

Salary and conditions are in accordance with the NSW Staff Specialists (State) Award.
