About the role:

Western Health offers a comprehensive advanced training program in General and Acute Care Medicine including for those undertaking dual training in association with another subspecialty. There are rotations for core General Medicine plus a range of rotations that have previously been accredited as general medicine-related and subspecialty terms, including acute terms.

The General Internal Medicine Unit operates across the two campuses - Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals. Footscray Hospital has four inpatient General Internal Medicine teams and Sunshine Hospital has five inpatient General Internal Medicine teams, all ward‑based teams, with over 6,000 patients admitted each year in total.

There is a senior medical registrar based at both Sunshine and Footscray Hospital. These roles provide managerial support to the General Internal Medicine service at each site and an inpatient consultation service. The senior medical registrar at Sunshine also supports the Obstetric Medicine Service. Both senior medical registrars work closely with the Director of Physician Education to organise the preparation for the RACP written and clinical examinations and coordinate Western Health as a site for the RACP clinical examination.

The ED Liaison registrar at Sunshine Hospital receives referrals from ED to General Internal Medicine, manages acutely unwell GIM inpatients in the ED and provides a medical consultation service for inpatients of other units in the ED.

Advanced physician trainees in GACM also participate in the after-hours clinical lead rosters, providing clinical oversight and support to junior medical staff and supporting the ICU Liaison team MET call response.

The advanced trainees in General Internal Medicine work closely with the Director of the Unit to ensure an efficient and high-quality service and to supervise and support junior medical staff. Rotations are also available to other specialty medical units at Western Health.

Six-month rotations are offered in the following areas:

Core Ward-based General & Acute Care Medicine

Senior Medical Registrar - Footscray Hospital (including perioperative medicine)

Senior Medical Registrar - Sunshine Hospital (including supporting obstetric medicine)

Community Medicine/Complex and Chronic Care

Obstetric Medicine (in conjunction with Albury-Wodonga General Medicine)

Neurology

Nephrology

Infectious Diseases

Respiratory Medicine

Respiratory Medicine/Infectious Diseases combination

Hospital in the Home

Intensive Care

ED Liaison

The General Internal Medicine Unit is closely associated with the University of Melbourne Western Clinical School and has an active research program and consultants with experience in supporting productive advanced training projects. There are also opportunities for future higher degree research training projects/PhDs.

Key responsibilities:

Participate in the after-hours Clinical Lead roster and on-call medical registrar roster

Quality patient care via clinical assessment, admissions and development of management plans

Day to day management of patients as well as a role in initial assessment of patients referred by other units

The initiation and interpretation of clinical investigations

Performance of required clinical procedures with appropriate training and supervision

Liaison with other team members, and communication with patients and their relatives as required

Attendance at ward rounds

About you:

Have completed basic physician training
