The Generic Surgical Sciences Examination: two papers over two consecutive days, anatomy, pathology and physiology, required by all nine RACS specialty boards, A$4,850 incl GST per attempt 123. Component failure fails you overall regardless of total score 3. Budget roughly four months full-tilt and sit it early.
What it is. All nine RACS specialty boards require a GSSE pass 1. Two papers over two consecutive days covering anatomy, pathology and physiology, weighted roughly anatomy 50%, pathology 25%, physiology 25% — and a component failure is an overall failure no matter what your total is 3. It costs A$4,850 including GST per attempt 2. There are three sittings a year: October 2026 (7–8 Oct), February 2027 (10–11 Feb, registrations 10 Nov – 1 Dec 2026) and June 2027 (9–10 Jun, registrations 16 Mar – 6 Apr 2027) 4.
Sit it early. It is the only gate with unlimited attempts before SET and a cap of four once you are on. Orthopaedics wants it passed before RACS registration and explicitly rejects the February sitting of your application year, so October of the prior year is your real deadline 1. Beyond the rules, basic science decays: doing it in PGY1 or PGY2 while medical school is still in reach is the single most repeated piece of advice on the sub, and a completed GSSE is a live asset when you apply for unaccredited and SRMO jobs in PGY3 56.
How people actually study. Last's Anatomy is the prescribed text and is universally described as both essential and a miserable read; reading it is necessary and not sufficient 7. The named resource set that recurs is the historical question bank plus an Anki deck of it, Instant Anatomy, Julie Mundy's practice exams, IMET notes, Pathoma and Robbins for pathology 7. Roughly four months at full tilt is the modal answer.
The trap. The old question bank is decaying in value — candidates from recent sittings report recognising only a handful of questions across both papers, and it is weakest exactly where the exam is heaviest, anatomy 78. Question-bank percentages are also inflated by when people buy the subscription. Read the text.

While some people have suggested reading Last's, that won't be enough.
early gsse will help secure reg jobs in the future
the Anki of the bank (they have the relevant passage from lasts and the relevant physiology text books.)
The Bank is becoming less and less reliable, especially for anatomy.
