It is a college round, not a job campaign. RANZCOG runs one application window a year — roughly 13 March to 13 April 2026 for the 2027 intake, interviews about 12 June, Phase 1 offers about 29 July 1. You need PGY2+ and general registration, plus citizenship or PR 1. Three attempts; applying in Australia and New Zealand in the same cycle burns two of them, and withdrawing within ten days of closing costs nothing 2.
What is scored. For the 2027 intake the final mark was CV 35%, mini-MSF 20%, interview 45% 2. The CV is out of 48: clinical experience 18, rurality and Indigenous origin 15, academic 6, professional 6, research 3 3. O&G experience is the biggest single lever — 92+ weeks scores 12, under 23 weeks scores nothing 3. Completing the Prevocational Pathway is worth 6 and costs $1,306 3. A PhD is worth 3 and a Masters is worth zero 3. Referee reports were abolished in 2026 and replaced with a mini-MSF of 6–8 raters across consultants, midwifery and allied health, approved by your head of department 2.
The goalposts are moving, so check your intake year. From the 2028 intake you need PGY3 plus 12 months of Australian or New Zealand O&G as a hard gate, and an MMI replaces the panel interview 4. From 2029 the CV is deleted entirely, replaced by a situational judgement test, and the Prevocational Pathway becomes compulsory 4.
And you still need the job. An offer with no employment is void, so the state campaigns matter too — NSW ran a separate early O&G round 22 May – 5 Jun 2026 with offers 3 Jul 6.
The counter-argument. Roughly the top third to half of Australian applicants are selected 5, and people get on from PGY3–5 without a higher degree 7. The community's read of the 2026 overhaul is that multi-source feedback levels the field against nepotism and brown-nosing 8.

Sounds like a lot of people who have been CV grinding very hard are going to have wasted a lot of time.
Multi-source feedback is a more even playing field - not just nepotism but also brown-nosers. The introvert who works hard and is actually nice to midwives etc. will get a better run than before.
I tell my students to find the supervisor of training in the discipline they are interested in, politely introduce themselves, ask for advice and follow it.
O&G is competitive but it's definitely not top-tier competitive. Most of my friends in O&G got on PGY3-5.
