Busiest OMFS ED for OMFS is RMH and you aren't a consultant there or a registrar at the moment, I know that to be a fact.

With the first of the Victorian hospitals opening their PGY3 + critical care application (Royal Melbourne Hospital, due in 2 weeks), I thought I would make a post to offer knowledge about the VIC hospitals which offer PGY3 critical care positions.

Having worked in 3 states, RMH was actually better in terms of being able to make a free struggle meal if need be.

Speaking to colleagues ED training at SVHM, RMH and Alfred is very good and supportive.

It's a shame because I really enjoyed my theatre time whilst on ortho, but the unit culture & the way RMH ortho treats their junior staff has discouraged me from pursuing the specialty as a whole.

I did AT at Western and RMH (did BPT in Sydney) - Western is great, really lovely humans there.

u/Ripley_and_Jones · flair:consultant · Sept 2023 · VIC · comment

However, you do all scopes yourself (no RMH Nurse Prac bullshit here) under supervision.

The psychiatrists aren’t seeking pay parity with private any more than I would expect RMH to pay me the same as a list with 20 scopes.

Commuting from Redcliffe to Parkville/RMH is helluva effort especially with Vic pay compared to Qld.

I also wouldn't put too much weight into "100% exam pass rate" claims as I'm sure people have heard of, basically all the top Victorian BPT hospitals (RMH, Alfred, Austin, even Bendigo) have achieved this.

Still possible to move hospitals in PGY2 - a lot of my friends who went rural ended up doing BPT/surg at the big RMH/Alfred/Austin/St Vs.

The regional rotational scheme currently sends 3rd year trainees to RMH for this.

Units people rate

RMH BPT · 13 authorsRMH surgical HMO · 3 authorsRMH surgical · 3 authorsRMH neurosurgery · 3 authorsRMH ED · single report (2 authors)
Read the verdicts on 5 units (under three authors it is one person's experience)
RMH BPT Physician training (BPT / general medicine) · 13 authors · 15 tagged sentences; no tally under 30
Tier-one Victorian BPT, reported well supported through exam years; the one warning is reputational — a bad reference at RMH is described as following you.
RMH surgical HMO General surgery · 3 authors · 4 tagged sentences; no tally under 30
Undersubscribed every year (with Alfred and St Vincent's) — the easiest tertiary surgical year in Melbourne to get, on the sub's account.
RMH surgical General surgery · 3 authors · 4 tagged sentences; no tally under 30
People arrive and ask which surgical terms are good; nobody answers with a verdict.
RMH neurosurgery Neurosurgery · 3 authors · 3 tagged sentences; no tally under 30
Four neurosurgery residents per rotation, so a double neurosurgery term is realistically achievable — and RMH is named as one of the two Victorian jobs (with plastics) that is genuinely hard to get.
RMH ED Emergency medicine · single report (2 authors) · 2 tagged sentences; no tally under 30 · one person's experience
single report — 2 author(s), 2 sentence(s), positive; below the 3-author bar, not a community verdict.
